Overlaying in practice

Overlaying is a wonderful technique for working with light and shadows – allowing one colour to dry before overlaying with another creates beautiful colour mixes that are full of depth. In this painting, areas of Cadmium Red have been overlaid with another colour and vice versa, creating simple, bold areas of changing colour. Although a still life, there is a sense of movement between the objects. The shadows on the fruit are built up to indicate shape and areas of overlaid paint leave the colours peeking through as if the light has fallen on the objects. A Cadmium Red and Alizarin Crimson mix has been overlaid with Cadmium Yellow to depict the cloth and create a sense of light passing across the table.
